The more things change…

Today’s reading is from Luke 7.

28-30″Let me lay it out for you as plainly as I can: No one in history surpasses John the Baptizer, but in the kingdom he prepared you for, the lowliest person is ahead of him. The ordinary and disreputable people who heard John, by being baptized by him into the kingdom, are the clearest evidence; the Pharisees and religious officials would have nothing to do with such a baptism, wouldn’t think of giving up their place in line to their inferiors.

“Pharisees and religious officials” is an intriguing statement. What’s that saying? The more things change, the more they stay the same? I find it very curious that even though Jesus has come back, it’s still pretty evident that the old ways, the ways of hate and greed and power, haven’t changed. The wording of 28-30 also says to me that it won’t ever change.

Lord GOD, I want to live a life of love and compassion. I want to follow who you are, I want your heart to be my heart. Your Word sets the guidelines for our right living, but may my selfishness and pride not get in the way of showing those who you are. May I act as your son in all things.
