God’s standards

So, news has come down the pipe that Newt Gingrich had an affair during the Clinton impeachment process back in the 90′s. Here’s a little of what Newt had to say about his infidelity:

“The honest answer is yes,” he said according to the Associated Press. “There are times that I have fallen short of my own standards. There’s certainly times when I’ve fallen short of God’s standards.”

Whoa, whoa, whoa. “There’s certainly times…”?

Newt, I hate to break it to you, but there’s not times when you fall short. You always fall short. I always fall short. Please don’t confuse yourself as possibly being close to living up to God’s standards. You’re never anywhere close, and things will go much smoother for you once you realize that.

If you need help getting some clarity here, give me a call, I’d be happy to chat with you.

What kind of cell phone is right for you?

This post was written on consignment by PayPerPost

In this day and age, if you don’t have a cell phone, you’re stuck in the early 90′s. In fact, I have a hard time thinking back to when I didn’t have a cell phone, and what it was like not knowing where people were, being unable to get ahold of people when I needed to, and just generally being disconnected.

However, not everyone can get a cell phone today. There’s lots of different obstacles that hinder people’s abilities to walk down to the local cell phone store and sign up for a contract.

Contract commitments – these can be a big deterrent. What happens if I sign up for a 2-year contract, then two months in realize that reception at home is spotty, and the phone isn’t what I wanted? That sinking feeling of knowing you’re stuck for many more months can simply leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Poor credit – I’ll also lump in no credit as well. While the major cell carriers aren’t too stringent in their credit checks, there’s definitely a group of people whose credit isn’t good enough to get a cell phone, so they’re left out of the mobile communications loop.

The bill – Don’t forget, you have to pay a monthly charge to keep that cell phone! What if you only want the cell phone for emergencies? What’s the sense in paying for a monthly fee, when you might not even use your cell phone monthly?

If any of the three points I’ve made above apply to you, there may still be a way for you to get a mobile phone. What I’m saying is, pre-paid cell phones may be the way to go for you.

A few years ago, my wife and I decided we wanted to get our daughter a cell phone, but really didn’t want to spend $20 or $30 a month for her to have a phone that she only needed in case she really wanted to get a hold of us, or we wanted to get ahold of her, or there was an emergency. While I don’t remember the carrier now, we ended up going with a prepaid cellular phone, and it fit perfectly for our needs.

There was no expensive monthly bill or lengthy contract commitment, so if we decided in a month that the prepaid phone wasn’t what we wanted, we weren’t stuck with it.

So, if you’re interested in having options, having freedom, and having choices when it comes to your cell phone, pre-paid might be the way to go for you.

The Microsoft

Since it was Kelsie’s birthday yesterday, she got to pick where we went for supper, and she chose Texas Roadhouse (I dig their salmon, big time).

Anyway, there’s several of us sitting around and the early Daylight Savings Time change comes up. It slowly segues to the mini-Y2K panic this new time change time change (yes, I meant to say that twice) has created, and my wife pipes up to talk about her office’s machines getting updated, and she spits out a winner.

“I think we had to get our patches from the Microsoft.”

The Microsoft. Flippin’ classic.

(Note: what I’m failing to tell you is that she’s actually pretty technically savvy, and when she was talking about this particular subject, she simply worded it wrong when it came out, and went to correct herself, but it was too late. I was laughing too hard for it to matter anymore.)

15

Kelsie turns 15 today (that’s her stuffed in a trash can at church). Yowza! I can remember just yesterday when I met her mom. Kelsie had just turned four, and I was visiting Wendy when Kelsie came out (you know, that little four year old pitter patter… wait, who am I kidding; she was a holy terror, even then!) and her and I chatted about this and that, I did the “take my thumb off” trick, and she looked at me like I was an idiot.

Somehow, I knew at that point that this was going to be very interesting.

So, happy birthday kid. You rock.

Tranforming worry into prayer

I subscribe to a Verse of the Day thread via eBible.com, and saw this today in my feed reader.

Philippians 4:6 | study verse
6Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns.

I was stunned. As we worry, let’s vocalize those worries, and form them into prayers to God, letting him know where we are, what’s going on, and what’s on our minds. It’s about creating a new mindset that, when we begin to worry, we need to change the way we vocalize those worries so they can be petitions to the Father.

A worry would go something like, “Man, what am I going to do about my doctor’s appointment next week. I just know they’re going to find something wrong, then what? What am I going to do if something is wrong? What will my family do, what will I do about my kids…”

Instead, we need to transform that worry into prayer. “Man, what I going to do about my doctor’s appointment next week. I just know they’re going to find something wrong, then what? [pause... re-focus on God here] Lord, be with me as I work through this. I don’t know the results, or what they’re going to be, but I know you’re with me. I know that, no matter what happens, I’ll be able to lean on you, and glorify you through my handling of this. Give me strength and comfort in this time. Oh Lord, I need you now.”
